<Urza> lol

<Raziel> LoL

<Urza> speak of the devil =)

<KFA_Belit> urza, do I HAVE to act normal!? Isn't that asking a bit to much!!!?!

<Raziel> hiya KJA

<Urza> Belit calm down =)

<KFA_Belit> I can't

<Urza> wanna freak

<KFA_Belit> oh gosh.. I love this guys BOOKS!

<Urza> come here at the end of the month =)

<KFA_Belit> this is incredible@

<Urza> we got Stackpole =)

<KFA_Belit> ...sigh... oh.. GEEZZZZZ!!!

<KJA> Hi all

<KFA_Belit> I can't take it! I CANT TAKE IT! No more fiction writing or drawing from me!...

<Urza> uni was freakin out when i told her =)

<ravskel> I have a question. Do the Authors get to have Starwars Authors Conventions

<ravskel> where they all gather

<ravskel> ?

<KFA_Belit> Oh geez oh geez.. Oh I got a question!!!!

<KJA> Yeah -- it's called a telephone

<mugu> hmm

<KFA_Belit> "If I ever draw pictures of your characters, WILL you look at them??? ...If I pay you...?"

<ravskel> Ok.

<Urza> alright peoples calm down =)

<KJA> Yes, to all those questions -- this is the real Kevin J. Anderson

<ravskel> Calm down

<KFA_Belit> ...oh... huh?

<KJA> As scheduled...I believe!

<Fixer> Question for anderson

<Sig9> early, even

<Urza> indeed =)

<Fixer> What is your next book called and what is it about?

<Aces_High> Hiya Kevin

<ravskel> Ok

<Urza> OK

<ravskel> Msg your uestions

<ravskel> To either me or Urza

<KJA> "next book" has to be clarified! I've got six out this year

<Urza> hehe =)

<KJA> Biggest "next book" is my prequel novel to DUNE, written with Brian Herbert

<KJA> HOUSE ATREIDES -- comes out from Bantam in October

<ravskel> Oh wow

<KJA> Based on lots of Frank Herbert's notes left behind when he died in 1986

<KJA> We're doing a trilogy. The second book, HOUSE HARKONNEN, is almost finished

<KJA> As many of you know, STAR WARS was heavily influenced by DUNE

<KJA> (just thought I'd get back on topic <g>!)

<Urza> =)

<Urza> of course

<KJA> Other books in the works are....

<KJA> OUTER LIMITS: Armageddon Dreams, based on the old TV series, with some new

<KJA> work by Harlan Ellison

<KJA> Also, I'm writing a new FANTASTIC VOYAGE adventure (remember that old movie?)

<KJA> where the characters shrink down and explore the human body

<KJA> In my novel, they explore one of the UFO alien bodies

<ravskel> Neat!

<KJA> Also, I'm finishing up the STAR WARS CHRONOLOGY, a big massive compendium of

<KJA> STAR WARS history, written with Dan Wallace

<Urza> Dan is my hero! =)

<ravskel> When you say Starwars history

<KJA> (Dan also wrote the ESSENTIAL GUIDES to planets and droids and other stuff

<ravskel> Do you mean Fictional Wise? Or the development of hte movies and ILM and LucasFilm

<KJA> Dan was a HUUUUUUGE help, since (as you may have noticed) there are lots of novels out there

<KJA> I mean "fictional wise" -- as in, all the novels/films/comics, etc. portrayed as real history

<ravskel> Oh Wow.

<KJA> btw, Rebecca is right here beside me, too, if you all want to yell questions at her

<Urza> yeah Dan knows A LOT

<KJA> (she says "thanks, honey!")

<Urza> maybe he'd rival our own Bob Vitas =)

<KJA> A round of applause for Dan, please

* Urza appluads ;-)

<Urza> I think a major question is will you and Rebecca be doing any Del Rey Star Wars work?

<KJA> Oooh, it's time -- we can start now

<ravskel> Well.. KFA_Belit has a question for you. Do you know if there Will be anymore Jedi Academy Based Comics comming out

<KJA> At the moment, we're not involved in any Del Rey work -- but they're just putting their

<KJA> program together

<KJA> Wait and see. It's a long-term plan.

<KJA> jedi Acad. comics -- apparently not at the moment

<KJA> Dark Horse had to cut their titles in order to fit more Ep. 1 stuff in

<ravskel> Speaking of Episode 1. How did you Like it?

<KJA> They were not given any more slots. X-Wing comics also got cancelled, as did Tales of the Jedi

<KJA> Write in if you liked anything in particular.

<KJA> Ep. 1, eh? You mean you guys haven't discussed it ENOUGH?

<Urza> hehe never =)

<ravskel> Well.. I was just wondering If you have any plans for Prequel based books

<KJA> No plans for prequel-based works. I did my "way-prequel" stuff in Tales of the Jedi <g>!

<ravskel> heh

<Urza> and great work they were

<ravskel> Ok Here is One. raziel wants to know What is your inspiration for the books

<ravskel> you write?

<KJA> (shucks...)

<Urza> "What happened to our YOUNG JEDI KNIGHTS series?" - Claire Knudsen-Latta

<KJA> Inspiration? Deadlines...being alive and jazzed by all sorts of things...love of writing...

<KJA> The YOUNG JEDI series filled 14 volumes (and three omnibus volumes from the SF Book Club)

<bubba> Urza, I saw your vote of confidence!

* Urza grins =)

<KJA> We felt we had taken the story arcs and characters through the major paces.

<KJA> You'll be glad to know that the YJKs have graduated and should start appearing in the new Del Rey books

<KJA> Jacen and Jaina in particular have starring roles in the new Salvatore novel

<Urza> Speaking of YJKs

<Urza> "I mean.... Ok I could accept that Luke had Callista. It hurt, but I accepted it ;) (i cheered when she died) But COME ON ALREADY!! they clearly like each other (TK and Jacen)... So why haven't Jacen and Tenel Ka gotten together yet?" - Tenel Ka

<KJA> They *are* together...at least as "together" as a YA book allows

<KJA> Besides, there IS no sex in the Star Wars universe.

<Urza> Obviously.

<KJA> (miti-chlorians take care of all the pregnancies, I guess...)

<Urza> lol

<Urza> "I noticed the lack of love life for Luke Skywalker in the Young Jedi Knight Series. It's no longer a secret that Mara Jade and Luke were being setup for a future together, did you intentionally leave Luke's life void?"

<bubba> Hmmm, Mirax Terrik might disagree on all counts there!

<KJA> Yes. We were forced to, because we couldn't give away his marriage to Mara until Tim's book was published

<KJA> So, there is no mention of his mate in our YJKs. I think she was off doing traveling-Jedi work

<KJA> But, there's no mention that he ISN'T married, either.

<Urza> Interesting, I wasn't aware how far back the conspiracy went. =)

<KJA> We knew about the marriage plans back before HEIRS OF THE FORCE came out

* Urza falls out of his seat

<Urza> ok =)

<KJA> (Besides, Rebecca doesn't see ME very often either...)

<Urza> "For both authors. Which books of your were submitted to LFL to get you approved to write in the Star Wars universe?"

<bubba> Wow.

<KJA> these chats inspire a close togetherness for us...

<KJA> I'm not entirely sure, since it was all done without my knowledge.

<KJA> I got a surprise phone call one day *after* I had already been approved. "Kevin, do you like STAR WARS?"

<Urza> well that leads to the next question =)

<Urza> "For Kevin.. What was your reaction when you got approved to write in the Star Wars universe and what did you do that day/night?"

<ravskel> Partited till the banthas came home

<ravskel> =)

<ravskel> Partied rather

<KJA> Jaw dropping with a thud....

<KJA> We also went out to dinner with a couple of nuclear physicists who were so excited to hear the news

<KJA> that they spent the meal sketching equations and designs for *real* lightsabers!

<ravskel> that must have been a Dream come true.. to be able to officially create parts of the starwars universe

<KJA> Well, by my count I have done 54 SW projects for Lucasfilm, so obviously I love it!

<Urza> no doubt

<bubba> Based on earlier comments, how much license did you have to create new characters?

<KJA> I never dreamed I would be involved in this, though -- it was a surprise to me

<Urza> So what's it like living in a castle?

<KJA> Most of the YJK stuff is all of our own creation. In the Jedi Academy books, I had a lot of freedom, too

<KJA> Lucasfilm is really very flexible and eager to let the creators do good work, rather than being overly restrictive

<KJA> Living in a castle? Check out the April issue of GOOD HOUSEKEEPING and see a picture!

<ravskel> Ive noticed that about LFL they seem to have their heads screwed on right

<Urza> I did =)

<KJA> But seriously...it's like being an old-time king...but more comfortable! (flush toilets and hot water and everything!)

<bubba> Did you work a lot with the other writers, to ensure the continuity?

<Urza> <chaotix> did those nuclear physics scientists come up with a workable design for a real lightsaber? *grin*

<KJA> Yes, we spent a great deal of time on the phone, discussing and scheming and planting characters for each other to use

<Urza> <PaAD_TenelKa> tell them i said hi

<KJA> You can see all the way back to THE LAST COMMAND that Tim Zahn planted the character of Moruth Doole when I asked him to

<bubba> That was my next question. There seems to be a lot of interleaving of characters.

<KJA> Hey, look at my anthologies and you'll get a good idea of how complicated this all can be

<bubba> Weren't some of them "invalidated" by the Special Editions, though? ;-)

<bubba> I know the complication factor is pretty high. I get lots of mail correcting my encyclopedia.

<Urza> ROTJ shows that Lucas doesn't care about the novels, hence the Coruscant scene

<KJA> well, they're still good STORIES.

<ravskel> Here is a question: KFA_BELIT has asked if you do any websufing and if you do.. do you ever read any of the fan fiction and what are your thoughts on any of it

<bubba> Yes they are.

<KJA> We're not *legally* allowed to read fan fiction, since we're professionally working for Lucasfilm

<ravskel> Seriously?

<Urza> yeah

<ravskel> wow

<KJA> As to general web surfing, though, we've got way too many book deadlines. We mostly use it for research

<ravskel> that is somehting i did not know

<Urza> "This is to both Kevin and Rebecca. What's it like living with another Star Wars author?"

<KJA> Seriously, if some fan happened to write fanfic with a similar scene or theme to one of my books in progress, they could claim I stole it

<ravskel> thats what i figured. but until that question was just asked I never really put 2 and 2 togheter

<KJA> As you know, SW authors are the sexiest humans in this galaxy, so it's wonderful.

<Urza> lol

<ravskel> Lol

<KJA> Besides, we get to work together, and Star Wars is our JOB. Not a bad career, if you ask us

<Urza> that leads into the next question =)

<ravskel> Tell me about it you have every star wars fan's wet dream

<Urza> "I notice that KJA edited some of his wife's short stories in the Tales books. Ever get any in house fighting because of some of the changes or 'editing' he did?"

<ravskel> To get paid to work on starwars

<KJA> She likes to say she got the job by sleeping with the editor...

<ravskel> lol

<KJA> She did only one short story, in the CANTINA anthoology

<KJA> But we both edit each other's stuff all the time anyway

<Urza> "I want to ask rebecca how old she is and how long she has been a SW fan?" - lordkyuss

<KJA> The YJK books were a full-blown collaborative effort, but even when her name isn't on the cover

<KJA> she has edited the manuscript. She spent this afternoon going over my second DUNE novel

<KJA> Reb is 42 and has been a SW fan since the day she saw it at Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, day after opening in 1977

<Urza> lucky =)

<ravskel> Wow.

<KJA> She says it was "skillful"

<ravskel> Mann's Theater is a very nice place to see a movie like that

<ravskel> lucky

<KJA> We think it's weird to realize that a lot of today's SW fans weren't even BORN when the first movie came out

<Urza> I wasn't

<ravskel> I wasn't either

<KJA> makes us feel old...uh, I mean like "mature Jedi masters"

<Urza> Saw ROTJ with my parents when I was 3 =)

<ravskel> Yea I saw ROTJ when i was 4 or something like that

<Urza> "I want to ask both authors what kind of computer and OS they use?" - lordkyuss

<bubba> I was (showing his age)

<KJA> you're all BABIES! ahhhhhh

<ravskel> Sorry didn't mean to scare you

<bubba> Gawd...I was 19 when ROTJ came out!

<KJA> We use Macintosh, PowerMacs G3 -- the only computer with the Force inside (forget Intel!)

<Urza> yeah all the authors seem to be Mac users =)

<ravskel> YEA!

<Urza> <Skeavis> ask them if they go to see Episode 1 at the preview or did they have to wait like the rest of us :)

<KJA> Besides, Macs can translate PC files in a snap...PCs seem to be "other system"-challenged

<KJA> We had to wait for Day 1 to see Ep 1 like the rest of you guys

<Urza> =)

<Urza> "In Darksaber Palleon loses the Chimaera when he joins the side of a warlord. But in Timothy Zahn's Hand of Thrawn series he has it back without saying what happen to the Chimaera? Any guesses?"

<ravskel> Heh

<KJA> (of course, we don't live near Lucas Ranch anymore...sigh)

<Urza> anymore?

<KJA> Pellaeon actually had TWO Chimaeras in his garage, but due to an Imperial mistake, they both had the same name'

<Urza> lol

<KJA> We used to live in the San Francisco area, but now we are in the Rocky Mountains (castles, you know)

<Urza> yeah =)

<Urza> <chaotix> what is your favorite character from Ep. 1, and why?

<ravskel> KFA_Belit wants to know if you watied out inline For hours like the rest of us For Ep1 tickets

<KJA> The pilot in the Naboo fighter ship who gets shot and crashes into the ground in front of the waterfall -- because he doesn't have an action figure, and I feel sorry for him

<Urza> hehe

<bubba> LOL!

<KJA> We bought our tickets days early, so we only had to wait 45 minutes

<Urza> "What do you feel was your best Star Wars book that you wrote?" - Chaotix

<KJA> DARKSABER definitely, and LIGHTSABERS in the YJK series.

<KJA> We're hoping to write a "medium-saber" to keep up the tradition

<Urza> hehe

<Urza> <RSL[KarrdeKNR]WS8> Something thats always bugged the heck outta me. Could you ask KJA the process he went through, or how he went about getting published in the first place?

<KJA> by writing and writing and writing and writing andwriting and writing andwriting and writing and writing and writing

<KJA> and submitting and submitting and submitting and submitting ...until I got published

<KJA> I had 80 rejection slips before my first story was accepted anywhere (fpr np pay)

<KJA> (for no pay)

<Urza> ouch

<Urza> that's gotta hurt

<bubba> Sounds like my college job search!

<Urza> "How many books are you writing at this point?" - Raziel

<KJA> Persistence is the key -- I've now got lots of bestsellers and awards, but I also have over 800 rejections, all told

<ravskel> Raziel asks " What is the usual amount of time it takes a book to be written and published"

<KJA> we're now writing seven different novels at the same time, all in various stages of completion

<ravskel> by rejections you mean Full Stories?

<KJA> Yes, rejections on fully, completed works.

<KJA> The usual amount of time it takes a book to be written...depends on how much of a hurry they're in

<KJA> Some books take years of research and editing and rewriting, other books can be in the stores six months after I get the job in the first place

<ravskel> Wow.

<KJA> Depends on how much work you can do, how much coffee you can drink, how little sleep you can endure...

<ravskel> Yea.. I found caffinee is an important part to the creative process

<KJA> Our YJK series, all 14 books, came out *every three months* without a break, so we were delivering a new volume every three months, without a rest

<KJA> Plus I was writing other projects, too, comics, X-Files, and an original SF novel

<KJA> And Reb had her three JUNIOR JEDI novels in between

<Urza> "How many books are you writing at this point?" - Raziel

<KJA> Seven in progress at the moment, and a few others already written and currently in production

<KJA> what...you want us to take a *vacation*? what would we do??

<Urza> "For Rebecca... How's it feel to have your name on the cover of Star Wars novels?"

<Urza> and why don't we swing that to kevin too =)

<KJA> "Sometimes it's still hard to believe. I see my name on the cover, and somehow a part of my mind thinks it couldn't possibly be me."

<ravskel> RSL[KarrdeKNR]WS8 Wants to know where you do your primary research and how ....

<KJA> for me (KJA), I have been trying to be a writer since I was five, so I'm glad I can finally see my name on a cover.

<KJA> Depends on what the book is.

<KJA> We both just went to Morocco to do DUNE research.

<KJA> For an X-Files novel, RUINS, we went to the Yucatan to study Mayan ruins

<ravskel> !

<Urza> And for star wars? =)

<KJA> for my jungle spy-comedy AI! PEDRITO! we spent a week in Ecuador in the Andes Mts., in the cloud forests, etc.

<KJA> For Star Wars, we watch the movies over and over again...I go to Death Valley out in the desert

<KJA> I was snowed in during a blizzard in the Sierra Nevada mountains when I wrote the polar ice-caps scenes in DARK APPRENTICE

<KJA> (I love this job.)

<ravskel> Im starting to be envious !

<KJA> Just *starting*?

<mugu> makes me wanna be a writer :}

<Urza> too late for me, they've done star wars... that's enough for me =)

<KJA> Nah, what we need more is READERS! Go out and convert some of those mall-wanderers.

<Urza> "Question for Mr. Anderson: What do you think regarding how people feel about the "superweapons" in your books (ie. Sun Crusher)?" - LStranger

<KJA> We worked for a national weapons laboratory for over a dozen years. We know exactly how big governments think about superweapons

<Urza> (i'm running out of question people /msg Urza <yourquestionhere> to ask)

<KJA> I've never understood why some SW fans had the impression that the Empire would build *one* Death Star ... and then stop!?

<KJA> After all, the thing *worked* -- ask anybody from Alderaan.

<ravskel> hehe

<KJA> There's a chapter in DARKSABER where Han and Leia discuss how the superweapon technology has now gotten out of the hands of big governments

<ravskel> but only one little torpedo took it out

<KJA> and in the hands of thugs like the Hutts (i.e., Saddam Hussein).

<Urza> <chaotix> what are your inspirations for the superweapons in your books?

<KJA> Yeah, but the second Death Star *fixed* the torpedo vulnerability problem. Live and learn.

<KJA> Inspiration for superweapons? Imagining really cool explosions and expensive special effects budgets!

* SithRose chuckles.

<ravskel> Lutar.:. wants to know "what you guys do in your free time if you have any....."

<Urza> <Aces_High> Any idea if someone's planning to write novels way *after* the events of "Jedi", like 40-50 years later?

<KJA> (in a novel, I can spend all I want on effects!)

<KJA> What free time? If we had free time, we could write another book!

<ravskel> Spoken from a true author

<KJA> I don't know about 40-50 years. Our YJK books and the new Del Rey arc take place 20+ years.

<Urza> <KFA_Belit> Durron were in our world? What would he listen to?

<SithRose> Are you planning to write about Jacen and Jaina when they're older as well? I.E. When they're having kids?

<SithRose> Forgive if I ask questions that have already been asked...I had a few minor computer problems.

<KJA> Kyp Durron would definitely listen to....STAR WARS soundtracks, of course.

<KJA> When Jacen and Jaina are having kids? But they're brother and sister -- gross!

<mugu> What kind of restrictions do you have when writing your books?

<ravskel> KFA Belit and KXOEllen want to know if you have writers block. what techniques do you use to rid yourself of it

<KJA> Definitely no incest....

<bubba> Kyp strikes me more as a Soundgarden type of person.

<SithRose> No, definitely no incest. <chuckles> But romance outside the family, perhaps?

<KJA> We don't have time for writer's block. We write our way through any slow spots -- mainly by having other projects in the worksa

<KJA> We can switch off to more interesting stuff for a while/

<ravskel> Yet another benifit of being a good author.. Lots of projects

<bubba> More interesting than Star Wars?!?!

<KJA> Really, Kyp would listen to Crystal Method, Psykosonik, Mortal Kombat stuff

<Urza> <Flim> ask him if he thought it was just a wee bit far-fetched to have one Force user thwart off a whole Imperial fleet like that

<KJA> Look, *proofreading grammar*, even in a SW book, is less interesting than making up sandworm fights in DUNE

<ravskel> He has a point there

<KJA> Not far-fetched at all -- he was channeling the powers of dozens of Jedi, and the sheer power killed him

<KJA> Besides, out in space, there's no friction, nothing to stop you from *moving* something

<Urza> Belit would like to know if she can email the address of her online art gallery to browse?

<KJA> And besides besides, Lucasfilm approved it and blessed it -- so it happened.

<SithRose> Kevin: You keep mentioning Dune. Are you currently working on a Dune project?

<KJA> She can just post it here. don't know if we'll have time to look anytime soon, though. I'm half done with the FANTASTIC VOYAGE novel...

<mugu> fantastic voyage, isnt that with the big yellow school bus?

<KJA> Sithrose, yes I'm writing three prequels to DUNE -- but you can all go to www.dunenovels.com for lots of information and updates

<ravskel> Fantastic voyage was where they shrinked people

<ravskel> and put them inside some guy

<KJA> Yes, they shrink the big yellow school bus and go inside the body of a teacher...

<KJA> or maybe not

<ravskel> haha

<Urza> <KFA_Belit> please post this whole msg: "I work currently on CGFmembers (star wars related) and don't have another gallery up, but when I scan in my full collection! Thanks! I'll post it at this URL: http://www.thecgf.org/kat/pictures.html

<KJA> for all our SW projects -- and everything else -- check out www.wordfire.com

<Urza> <lordkyuss> could you ask them what they think of jarjar binks?

<KJA> That's especially good to check our travel and appearance schedule, to see if we are in your neck of the woods anytime soon

<KJA> Rebecca loved when Jar Jar got his tongue stung in the pod racer.

<KJA> I loved when Jar Jar...

<KJA> when Jar Jar...

<KJA> ummmm

<Urza> hehe =)

<KJA> when Jar Jar's skin got sunburned on Tatooine!

<Urza> sounds like some didn't like Jar Jar

* SithRose chuckles

<KJA> A serious answer about Jar Jar

<ravskel> Quakcmaster: would like to knwo if there is anyone you know of that you can contact about continuity problems...

<KJA> I wouldn't have minded the slapstick Jar Jar humor if it had been tempered by some witty "Han & Leia" style banter for the grownups

<Urza> exactly

<KJA> No, there's nobody we can contact about continuity problems...we don't deal with the MOVIE part of LFL

<ravskel> QuackMaster.:. says thanks =)

<Urza> Ever have any of your Star Wars work rejected?

<KJA> No, we've had change suggestions made (and we made them) but in 54 projects, never had any rejected outright

<Urza> =)

<Urza> this ones long

<Urza> "I have read all the books in the Young Jedi Knight Series and I was slightly disappointed. Why were all of the stories told in such a simple manner? I thought the books were supposed to be aimed at the fourteen year old audience, for the main characters, Jacen and Jaina, are fourteen in the books. The writing style seemed more like it was aimed for a twelve year old audience. Why was that?" - MystAwake

<Urza> and it fits i'm surprised =)

<KJA> We're going to need to wrap this up soon -- so think up your most compelling questions while I answer this one...

<mugu> oh good compelling

<KJA> We wrote the YJK books at basically the same level as my other novels, but with younger characters

<KJA> we did not aim them at a 12 year old audience at all

<mugu> kevin, silly thing, is kyp pronounce kuh-eye-p or kip

<KJA> We do get fan letter from people as old as 83 years and as young as 6. Sorry if you thought they sere not in the level you expectedc

<KJA> KIP

<ravskel> Actually I wanted to know htat one too

<ravskel> thanks mugu

<KJA> (or you can pronounce it BILLY if you like...)

<mugu> ravskel: =P

<KJA> The bell is ringing at the end of the hour and we have an appointment with the dark side

<SithRose> Do you find it's harder to work with younger characters than it is with older ones?

<KJA> OK, one last question...

<mugu> return of kysp evil brother, billy bob durron

* SithRose hasn't read enough of your books to come up with good questions.

<KJA> Younger character are difficult because the maturity level can change so much between real people

<KJA> If you pick five different 15 year olds, they'll have varying maturity levels.

<KJA> We're signing off now, guys -- thanks for having us.

<Urza> If you'd like to see more of KJA head on over to http://www.talkcity.com/chat.htmpl?room=SciFiLit
