Holonet FAQ version .05
Compiled by Kalten
Last Updated July 08, 1999

Kalten can usually be found on the Holonet in #Help. He does appreciate it though if people read this first before coming in and asking questions.

What do people mean when they say, "Stop Hopping!"?
Well, hopping is when you join and leave a channel repeatedly. It's really not very nice, or in good form, so people tend to get mad at you for doing it.

How do I connect to Holonet?
You can connect to Holonet in a couple ways:
  1. Using our Java client
  2. Using a real IRC client.
  3. Using Java off someone else's page

How can I connect using a Java client?
You can link on over to http://holonet.org/chat/ or try to find one of the random sites that has a java client connecting to our server.

What is a real IRC client?
Well, these are separate programs that allow you to connect to any IRC server. The most popular clients for the PC are mIRC from http://www.mirc.com/ or PIRCH from http://www.pirchat.com/. There are many other IRC clients out there, however, so you are not limited to just those two!

Can you unban me from #example?
We're sorry, but if you've been banned from a channel, it's usually because you aggravated someone else. Message the person to ask them to unban you, or find out what you did wrong.

I don't see my question here, where should I go for help?
For starters, there's the channel #Help on irc.holonet.org itself.

I've got my own chat/IRC server, and I was wondering if I could link to you. Or, I've got my own chat/IRC server, and I was wondering if you'd like to link to me.
Well, if your server is running at a decent speed (about a T1 or above), is completely legal, is based around Star Wars, and is willing to be a leaf of Holonet. If you don't know what any of these terms means, it probably means that you won't be able to get a link. But if you do, we have an online form for you to fill out.

I downloaded this 'bot' off of a website. Can I run it on the Holonet?
You can run your bot just as long as it stays in its channel and doesn't attack other people. If in doubt, ask one of the Ops, Prophet, Numa, or Kalten, if it's ok to run it.

Someone told me that I shouldn't nuke other people. What exactly is nuking and what's so bad about it?
Well, nuking is against the rules of the server. It's a k-lineable offense, and it happens when someone decides that they want to deny your net access, and possibly even crash your computer. For more info on nuking, go to http://irchelp.org/irchelp/nuke/

Help me! Someone is nuking me!
If you know that someone is nuking you, and have a log of it, tell one of the IRCOps, Prophet, Numa, or Kalten, about it and we'll see what we can do about it.

Why have I been k-lined?
K-lining isn't exactly a frequent occurrance on the Holonet. If you have been k-lined though, it's a good idea to check out the Server Policies.

I've heard about this "cloaking" thing...what is it? How do I do it?
Cloaking protects you from other people nuking you by hiding your IP address. In essence, it "cloaks" you. You can activate it by typing "/mode your_nickname +z" without the quotes, and replacing "your_nickname" with whatever nickname you happen to be using.

People in a room keep on telling me not to use colors. What colors can I use on the Holonet?
Well, it all really depends on the room. The Holonet does not say what colors you can or cannot use, rather, the patrons of the room that you are have preferences and dislikes of certain colors.

How come when I join a room, no one says anything?
This could be for a variety of reasons, maybe everyone's busy, maybe they've got nothing to say. Whatever the reason, it's not a personal insult, so you'll just have to live with it. You might want to try again later to see if anything's come up. Remember, if a room is boring, you can always just leave it. No one's holding a gun to your head forcing you to stay in a room.

People keep on saying I don't need to put my nickname in front of everything I say...what's the deal?
Your nickname is automatically put in front of everything you say, whether you see it or not. When you type it in, it can get kind of annoying. Don't worry, it shows up in every room that you type in.
